Grilled Soy Sesame Asparagus

Soy and Sesame take center stage in the flavor profile for this Grilled Soy Sesame Asparagus side dish. Grilling adds to the flavor as well! Take your asparagus up a notch and learn another way to add asparagus to your dinner plate. This asparagus pairs very well with Asian grilled meats like satays or kebabs. We also enjoyed it with Jamaican Jerk spices. Lots of flavor in the dish needs an entrée that stands up to it!

Choosing Asparagus

Asparagus should be firm to the touch. If you hold the spears out, they shouldn’t bend. Fresh asparagus will stick straight out. The tip should be tightly closed. Look for freeze damage (asparagus is often shipped over ice). Usually, the tip looks wet and wipes off if it has been frozen. The spears should be a bright green color that blends to white at the bottom of the spear. Thickness of the asparagus isn’t as important, but the really thin spears do cook extremely quickly. Be mindful of timing!

Easy Process for Grilled Soy Sesame Asparagus

Just mix Toasted Sesame Oil, Soy Sauce, Minced Garlic and Brown Sugar into a bowl that will fit the asparagus. Once it is mixed, toss the asparagus to coat it. All of the sauce will stick to the asparagus, or you can pour it over the asparagus once you’re grilling or baking it. The flavors are amazing, so you want to get all of them! We like the Toasted Sesame Oil (it’s darker when you’re looking at the oils in the store) as it has bigger flavor for this type of recipe.

With the grill on low or the oven on 350F, cook the asparagus for about 8 minutes or until tender. I like to pile the asparagus together on the grill so they steam through as well, but put them in a single layer in the oven.

Once they are tender, sprinkle them with sesame seeds to serve.
