Sautéed Mushrooms and Onions

What’s better than a nice grilled steak on your dinner plate? That same steak smothered in sautéed mushrooms and onions! This elegant side is easy to make and packs a big punch whether paired with your favorite meat, as a topping for a baked potato, or as a meal on its own!

Mushrooms

I like to use about half and half white button and baby bella mushrooms in this dish. With so many types of mushrooms to choose from, use whatever you like and prepare them the same way!

If you buy whole mushrooms, don’t wash them. Mushrooms soak up a lot of water then take forever to cook and get mushy while you’re cooking off the water. It’s a lot better to use a moist paper towel to wipe them down.

Onions

I normally use regular yellow onions in this recipe. I don’t think you want the sharp flavor of a red onion. Sweet yellow onions like a Vidalia or Walla Walla would be terrific!

I like to leave the onions in larger slices. This makes them easier to pick up as you’re eating. It also brings a big bite of flavor. I cut the top and bottom from the onion and remove the outer layer or two to get to the good part of the onion. Depending on the size of the onion, I’ll cut 4-5 slices. A single cut across each slice leaves the long strips that are perfect for this recipe.
